On April 26, 1937, hell broke loose over the city of Guernica, the historical and cultural center of the Basque Country. In the evening, a two-hour bombardment of the city by the German Condor Legion began.

Several groups of German aircraft dropped aircraft and incendiary bombs on Guernica. According to eyewitnesses, those who tried to escape the bombing were fired upon with machine gun fire from the planes. As a result of the bombing, a fire broke out in Hernika, destroying three quarters of the city.

 

According to various sources, the bombing claimed the lives of several hundred to several thousand people. Most of the victims were women and children...

 

The tragedy shook the world. And Guernica became a symbol of brutal, unjustified fascist aggression.
