However, in the morning, Ukrainians literally “woke up”. And with good reason!

Anora by American director Sean Baker won the Best Picture nomination. 

The film became the winner of this year's Oscars. “Anora won in five of the six nominations it was nominated for: “Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Picture.

Sean Baker himself has won four Oscars at once - for writing, editing, directing and best film. Before him, only Walt Disney received so many awards in one person, but for different projects.

This decision of the film academics caused considerable surprise. Critics called the film a passable one, and its value for world cinema was highly questionable.

But Ukrainians were most outraged by the fact that in the midst of the bloody war waged by Russia against Ukraine, the Anora team was showing a story about Russians, with Muscovite actors in the frame who openly support the Putin regime's brutal aggression and genocide of Ukrainians. This is perhaps a precedent in the long history of the Oscars.
