I don't know a single political journalist, political scientist, or military observer who was able to sleep last Sunday night, when Iran launched a massive missile and drone attack on Israel. We were waiting for a terrible denouement of the chain of historical and contemporary Middle East events that would inevitably lead to a global Third World War.

What would have happened if at least neighboring countries with their modern weapons had come to Ukraine's defense? For example, Romania would have covered Odesa. Could Poland have "covered" the skies over western Ukraine, freeing up additional forces in the northeast?

 

And why, after all, at the beginning of a full-scale war, all experts unanimously began to call the guarantees of the Budapest Memorandum "worthless"?

 

The Budapest Memorandum referred to the security guarantees that Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States gave to Ukraine in exchange for the transfer of nuclear weapons: not to threaten the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine by force or the use of force, and to refrain from economic coercion that could violate Ukraine's rights.

 

If Russia has broken all the norms of international law, neither the United States nor the United Kingdom have abandoned these norms.
