In 2003, the world archaeological community was struck by a real sensation. In Novhorod-Siverskyi, Chernihiv region, on the territory of the Transfiguration Monastery, founded in 1033, archaeologists discovered the remains of strange stone walls.
It turned out that these are the walls of a still unknown to science secular building from the time before the Mongol invasion (most likely a princely palace).
This in itself is a rather rare case of discovering pre-Mongol masonry. But under the walls of the refectory in the basement, skeletal remains of women and children were also discovered.
