Recently, archaeologists in Turkey found an intact Neolithic female statuette (5500-8000 BC). A completely intact female anthropomorphic figure carved from marble is a rare find that illustrates the high level of skill of an ancient artisan. Last year, in Stryiskyi Park in Lviv, the sculpture “Confident” by Vasyl Korchovyi caused outrage, which eventually resulted in an act of vandalism.

“Confident” was doused with recycled oil and an attempt was made to set it on fire.

 

There is a gap of a millennium between Neolithic and contemporary art. Why do we react to a female statuette created tens of centuries ago as a masterpiece, while we react with indignation to the work of a contemporary sculptor who was not afraid to show, let's say, the naked female nature as natural, not sexual?

 

This is the subject of our conversation with the cultural critic Marina Makeeva.
