"I am Narbut, and I am Ukrainian," — this is how simply, yet with profound dignity, a man who, in just over three decades of life, managed to do more for Ukraine's visual identity than entire institutions, defined himself.
The 140th anniversary of the birth of Heorhiy Ivanovych Narbut (1886–1920) was recently observed. He was a genius graphic artist, illustrator, and the creator of the Ukrainian state coat of arms, the first banknotes, and postage stamps.
This anniversary is not just a date on the calendar, but an opportunity to remember the master who "dressed" the young Ukrainian state in its first visual garments.
