Ukraine is still under the impression of the Oscar ceremony. For the first time in the history of Ukrainian cinema, the film "20 Days in Mariupol" directed by Mstyslav Chernov won the most prestigious Oscar award, winning the nomination "Best Documentary". This is the first Oscar in the history of Ukraine.
For Ukrainians, this Oscar is much more important than the most prestigious award in the world of cinema. Because the film is about a brutal war. About each of us. About our pain...
The film tells about the horrors of besieged Mariupol, about the despair and incredible suffering of people, about the shocking atrocities of the Russian military.
Together with Mstyslav Chernov, photographer Yevhen Maloletka and producer and journalist Vasylisa Stepanenko worked on the film, who during the first 20 days of the Russian invasion filmed the crimes of the Russian occupiers in the besieged Mariupol - mass deaths of city residents and spontaneous burials, bombing of a maternity hospital, the death of pregnant women and unborn babies, the destruction of residential areas of the city. It was these documentaries that formed the basis of the film.
