Dozens of American World War II veterans arrived in Normandy, greeted by cheers from the crowd, on the eve of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when more than 150,000 Allied troops landed in France to drive out the Nazi forces once and for all.
This was reported by the world-famous news agency Reuters in its photo report.
What do you think about when you look at these pictures? First of all, about the care with which the 100-year-old veterans were surrounded by both the sending and receiving sides. Probably, some of the veterans of the grand landing in Normandy on June 6, 1944, can still move on their own legs, but all of them were met with mobile chairs so that they would not get tired on the way to the hotel.
After all, the flight from the United States and Britain is already a great physical strain for them.
It is also noteworthy that all the living participants of the Normandy battles are over 100 years old. That is, we will not see younger retired soldiers, participants in combat operations outside their countries, hung with awards, as we see on the Kremlin tribune in Moscow.
This is a tribute to those who actually participated in the historic event.
Impressed by this photo report, Hromada decided to show its readers historical photos of the Allied landings in Normandy in 1944 and the meeting of veterans in France who arrived for the celebrations.
