While above, over the city, sirens wailed and more explosions echoed from cynical strikes on the very center of Kharkiv, underground, within the depth of a safe fallout shelter, the future of Ukrainian innovative science was being born.

Symbolically, just in time for Science Day, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University celebrated the opening of its newly redesigned educational and scientific space, "Landau." This is not merely 2.5 thousand square meters of concrete — it is a territory where continuous intellectual pursuit will endure under any conditions.

Compensating for Loss:
Intellect Against Degradation

Today, the university deliberately steps beyond the boundaries of classical education. As noted by Tetiana Kaganovska, the Rector of Karazin University, the institution consciously embraces the role of a powerful social entity designed to preserve and restore the human and scientific potential of the region.

After all, war brings not only physical destruction but also the threat of intellectual drain, leaving the youth deprived of opportunities to explore, create, and experiment. This new space is designed to compensate for and reframe these challenges, providing young minds with a secure offline platform for communication built on the principle of lifelong learning.

The realization of this large-scale project was made possible through the joint efforts of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration with the support of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The heart of this space is the updated interactive science museum, "LandauCenter." It is no longer just an exhibition of showpieces but a vibrant platform for developing critical thinking and engaging schoolchildren and students in hands-on research.

Its launch was marked by a compelling demonstration of achievements from the university’s faculties: ranging from innovations in modern medicine to unique developments in alternative energy.

As noted by Mayor Ihor Terekhov, Kharkiv historically relies on its intellectual status. For the city, it is vital to preserve higher education and bring back the student community. The first step in this direction during the war was the construction of underground schools. Now, the launch of such a space beneath the shelter of Karazin University represents the next qualitative milestone in developing safe education for the frontline megacity.

STEM Education as the Foundation for Reconstruction

The opening of the underground "Landau" space sparked genuine admiration across the country’s academic community. The event was attended by Volodymyr Semynozhenko, Vice President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and Academician, who focused attention on STEM demonstrations presented by young Kharkiv scientists.

According to him, this event is of fundamental importance specifically for Kharkiv, as the exact and natural sciences are currently enduring their toughest trials on the frontline while simultaneously remaining the key factor in the country’s future reconstruction.

Volodymyr Semynozhenko emphasized that Ukraine is already experiencing a critical shortage of graduates choosing physics, mathematics, chemistry, or biology. Yet, it is precisely from these classrooms and laboratories that the nation’s actual innovative journey begins, making the support of such initiatives an absolute national priority.

When the enemy attempts to turn a frontline city into a wasteland, deprive it of its future, and intimidate it with constant shelling, Kharkiv responds with the only weapon against which missiles are powerless — the force of human reason.

Russian iron can tear down walls, but it will never be able to block the light of science, which beats in the very heart of Kharkiv.
