Izyum is a city that rose from the ashes. It endured difficult trials of occupation, unemployment, and war...
History and culture of Izyum
Izium has a rich historical heritage dating back more than three thousand years. Founded as a trading city, it became an important cultural and economic center of the region. During the Soviet Union, industry and social infrastructure developed in Izium, but with independence, the city faced new socio-economic challenges.

On February 24, 2022, like a bolt from the blue, war broke out... Shelling across Ukraine became increasingly intense. The city of Izyum suffered the most: 80% destruction, hunger, cold, and a lack of basic necessities for survival. It used to be a very beautiful and picturesque city that flourished, where everyone lived their lives, but now there is nothing: no nature, no work, no education.
Then came the occupation, which left people with a lasting fear that they would be beaten and shot. There was no electricity, no internet, nothing to eat, no gas, and no water. People cooked food on homemade stoves, and if it was in the stairwell, everyone cooked soup together, which was called “soup of the day.” Since the refrigerator did not work, while it was winter, they froze food in the snow or simply on the street.

The occupation of the city by Russian troops lasted from March to September 2022, during which time local residents endured incredible hardship. The city became the scene of fierce fighting, and its infrastructure suffered significant damage.
Thousands of people were forced to leave their homes and seek refuge in western Ukraine or abroad. However, those who remained witnessed horrific events — shelling, looting, and arbitrary arrests. Local residents tried to survive while coping with the horrors of occupation.
Despite all the trials, the residents of Izyum showed incredible resilience and unity. Under occupation, they organized themselves to support each other, help those who suffered from violence, and continue the fight for freedom. Local volunteers tried to provide people with basic necessities such as food, medicine, and clothing.

Underground groups organized resistance, gathering information about enemy military units and trying to maintain contact with the Ukrainian military. In September 2022, after prolonged fighting, Izium was liberated from the occupiers. This was an important milestone not only for the city but for the whole of Ukraine. The return to normal life was not only a physical but also a psychological process. It will take not months or years, but millennia to rebuild Izyum, and the situation in Ukraine and, accordingly, in the city of Izyum remains unstable.

Houses have been destroyed, buildings have been overgrown with vegetation, the city's residents are traumatized, there are no schools or decent jobs, the city's development has come to a standstill, there are mines in the forest, a curfew is in place, and everything else needs to be rebuilt.
But we, the residents of Izyum, hope for the best, for the restoration of the city, for the return of jobs, for the revival of houses, for the repair of schools, and everything else.
