It has been 80 years since the Trinity test was conducted. Half a century ago, on July 16, 1945, the dawn of the atomic age began, shining brighter than a thousand suns over the state of New Mexico. On that day, a nuclear device—the prototype of the atomic bomb—was detonated at the Trinity test site. Three weeks later, an American bomber dropped a terrible bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
It is a day to remember the lives it affected and to acknowledge the lasting consequences.
