If 2022 was a year of shock and evacuation for Ukrainian scientists, and 2023–2024 were years of stubborn survival and reorientation toward the military front, then 2025 has become the time when Ukrainian science stopped merely patching up holes left by missiles.

Academicians, engineers, and young researchers—working under constant threat in Kharkiv, Kyiv, or Lviv—have begun laying a new, stable foundation for post-war Ukraine. This was the year when the intellectual front transformed into a strategic bridge leading the country from the darkness of war toward a brighter future: one that is smarter, safer, and more technologically advanced.

To begin with, a graduate of Karazin University has been re-elected as the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU).

Anatoliy Hlibovych Zahorodnii — Ukrainian theoretical physicist, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, graduate of the Faculty of Radiophysics, and a member of the University’s Supervisory Board.

Furthermore, Volodymyr Semynozhenko, a native of Kharkiv, graduate of Karazin University, and Academician of the NASU, was elected as Vice President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Key Highlights In 2025, despite the challenges of wartime, Ukrainian science demonstrated impressive results. Kharkiv physicists and researchers from across the country continue to maintain high international standards, implementing technologies that once seemed like science fiction.

Countering EMP-Terror: Thanks to unique developments from the "Molniya" (Lightning) Scientific-Research and Design-Construction Institute (NTU "KhPI"), Ukraine has gained new tools to protect strategic facilities from electromagnetic weapons and pulsed power terrorism.

An Artificial Sun on Earth: The participation of Ukrainian physicists in developing components for thermonuclear reactors brings the era of clean and safe energy closer.

Quantum Horizons: Breakthroughs in quantum technologies are laying the foundation for creating communication systems that are impossible to hack.

Pharmaceutical Leadership: The development of the pharmaceutical cluster in Kharkiv reinforces the city's role as a biotech hub, ensuring national drug security and creating high-tech medicines.

Genetics and Archaeology: Interdisciplinary research by the NASU allows for the combination of DNA analysis of ancient cultures with modern identification and treatment methods.

Kharkiv as a Scientific Outpost: The Hero City confirms its status as a leader in fundamental science, where the innovations of "Molniya" and academic institutes work toward strengthening the state's defense capabilities.
