The funeral of Ivan Franko on May 31, 1916, turned into an almost detective story, with investigations, conflicts, and loud emotions, which caused a considerable resonance and uproar among the Ukrainian clergy and Ukrainians in Lviv.

The reason was the refusal to hold a church funeral for the late Franko, an outstanding writer, translator, philosopher, public figure, and Ukrainian genius, because he was allegedly an atheist and refused to make his last confession.

 

Did Ivan Franko really not have a confession before his death? What role did the Muscovite trace play in this whole story?
