The Bloomberg agency learned that it could allegedly become a "pretence" during the visit of the US special envoy Steve Witkoff to Russia on August 8. The Kremlin is reportedly considering options to make concessions to US President Donald Trump, including an air ceasefire with Ukraine, to try to avoid the threat of secondary sanctions, even as Russia remains intent on continuing the war.
Bloomberg notes in its “Exclusive” section that Kremlin officials recognize that a visit by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff to Russia this week offers a belated opportunity to reach a deal with Trump, even if expectations of success are low, informed sources said.
A pause in air strikes using drones and missiles as a gesture of de-escalation could be one possible proposal — provided Ukraine also agrees, one of the people said.
But President Vladimir Putin will not agree to a general ceasefire in Ukraine as his forces continue to advance gradually on the front line and the goals of the war remain unchanged.
It is unclear whether the offer of restraint will come with conditions that would automatically make it unacceptable to Kyiv and its allies.
