Language experts have created a shortlist of sixwords that reflect the moods that helped shape the past year. After twoweeks of public voting and extensive discussion, they came together toreview the public's suggestions, voting results, and linguistic databefore declaring “brain rot” the final word of the year for 2024. Why“brain rot”?
“Brain rot” is defined as ”a predictabledeterioration of a person's mental or intellectual state, especiallyseen as a result of excessive consumption of online content that isconsidered trivial or unchallenging. Also: something characterized as“something that can lead to such impairment.
I do not know if it is possible tonumerous manipulations, outright lies, categorical political statements andinformation “fakes” can be categorized as “trivial,” but the fact that all of thisaffects our psycho-emotional state, dumbing us down, preventing us from thinking rationally andswings our mood from pessimism to optimism and vice versa, that's for sure!
